Next term at Motec our group and teacher Karyn are moving from gimp graphics to tidy it. In tidy it we have to a design a box that you can keep things in. First we have to make a functional model of your box design out of cardboard. The people in my group have come up with lots of designs that range from earring stands to mini wardrobes. The wood we are using is Radiata Pine because it is strong and it has a nice finish. By Hannah

MOTEC
Science with Mr Wiffen
On the 25 of June room 10 went to one of the science labs in Motueka High School. Mr Wiffen one of the 6 science teachers taught us. We were working on different metals, water H2O and hydrochloric acid (HCL). The different types of metals we used were Copper Cu, Zinc Zn, Magnesium Mg, Tin Sn, Iron Fe, Calcium Ca, Lead Pb. There were two others that Mr Wiffen demonstrated for us because they were way too dangerous for us to experiment with by our selves. These metals were Sodium Na and Lithium Li. We were put into groups of 2 or 3. To get started we needed to get our test tubes (3 tubes) and a stand but most important item we need for our safety was the safety googles, because the gases could splat out, especially when we use the acid. We were given a few metals at a time, for the first experiments we used water all we did was place the metal in to the test tube of water and observed the reactions. The Calcium was the most reactive while the others would form a few bubbles in the water or non at all. The calcium bubbled and fizzed, the water turned a milky colour and the water became a lot warmer than before. But for the ones Mr Wiffen demonstrated, the Sodium was the most reactive. With the acid we did the same thing but we used a bunsen burner. We put the acid into the test tube and placed the metal into the acid. Once the metal was in the acid we placed out thumb over top of the test tube to trap any gases the metal has released. While waiting for the gases to rise to the top we set fire to a splint, we then took our thumb off of the test tube and hovered to flame over the tube to see it would make a pop sound, it only worked on the Magnesium. Calcium, Sodium and Lithium were the only metals that we weren't able to experiment with, with the acid. Magnesium is used in fire works so it makes a very bright light when set on fire, we were able to test this. We had to change the flame on to our bunsen burner from an orange flame to a blue flame, after that was done we put the magnesium in the flame with a pair of tongs and waited for it to shine. This was a very exciting experiment.

Week 10 home communication and learning tasks
Room 10 -Week 10 Homework/ Home Communication
We have visitors this Monday from Boys College, Tuesday from Garin College and from Motueka High on Thursday. The students will have the opportunity to ask questions about theze colleges to assist your decision making on schooling from next year.
Look out for School prospectuses coming home with the students.
All schools have parent evenings and student visiting days planned over the next couple of months so please be pro-active in attending these.
Camp finances are all setled and paid up now. Following the students and parents amazing fundraising efforts, we have a class surplus of just under $700.
I propose to keep this banked to pay for the Whenua Iti visit planned for Term 4 which costs $17.50 per student. Additionally this leaves $200 in the kitty for our 'Big Day Out', traditionally held at Kaiteriteri for year eights in December. This will save me chasing you for more money later in the year. However if any-one would prefer their refund now then please contact me and I can ask Denise to get you a cheque for approx $24 and we can bill you for these fee's as they arise.
Snow Day is happening on Tuesday 14th August and many students have their permission and transport slips in already. Please assist and encourage your child to get these in by Friday, so I can sort the transport out over the holidays.

How do you make a Digi Stand?
To start off with you need to make a functional model out of cardboard with the right length and width as your stand. After some bookwork we did some experiments with some scrap acrylic (colored plastic) so we know how to make our stand later on.
We used the heat gun to heat the plastic to bend it. There are two types of bending, free bending which you use your hands to bend the plastic after it is heated. There is also formal bending which is when you use a bending tool to shape the plastic.
We also need to sand the edges with sandpaper until all the edges are fine. After the experiments we got to work on are stands . There were a few choices of colors of plastic. I chose dark see throw red plastic. First Mr Barton cut our designs out of the big pieces of plastic. Then we sanded the edges until they were fine. After that we bended the plastic until it was done. Then we had a picture of us and are product.

PLASTIC STANDS
The reason why we are doing this is because we need the skills for later on in life.
It will also help towards a job.
ITEMS:
Draft some ideas for your stand. once found the stand you want to do
make a functional model
Step 2:
Choose color of your thermoplastic .
Step 3:
Cut out the shape and start sanding the edges they have to be really smooth.
Step 4:
Use heat gun to soften plastic then mold it into the shape you want.
Step 5:
Let it dry
Step 6:
When dried drill holes for hinges, attach hinges.
Well done you have made you self a plastic stand.

-French Speaking Country Research
-You are on the short list of students selected to take part in an educational language learning exchange program. If you are the successful student you will go to live with a family in either France or one of the French speaking countries in The World and their child will come to live with your family.
To help the judges decide who should go, they have asked each student to present a brochure, poster or slide show and short speech (a minute to a minute and a half) on the country they wish to go to.
The judging criteria
Answer these questions:
Name 5 reasons why you chose the particular country you wish to live in?
What are the cultural differences you will need to be aware of and to respect in the country of your choice?
Which food will be the easiest for you to eat? Which food will you need to find a polite way to say, ‘I do not like that’? (For extra points, how would you say that in French)
You will arrive in late June. Which clothes will you need to pack to wear when you first arrive? (your parents are sending a box of your other clothes over later.)
What activities or sports will you take part in that are different to the ones you do here in New Zealand?
Entries close June 22nd. Be ready to share with the judges Thursday of Week 9.

MARVELS MOTEC
In MOTEC we are doing sewing. Our whole group is making bags. My bag is made for my mum to carry my dog, it is black and bright pink.
The first step to making is to select a fabric,I choose black nylon and pink polyester.
The next step is to cut out the shapes that would become our bag. Luckily the teacher has templates that you pin to the fabric and cut out the correct shape that you want. After that l got a piece of nylon and a piece and a of polyester of the same shapes pin them and sew them together.
Next I needed to attach the zip. It was pretty easy all you needed to do was cut the right size zip track and then sew it on to the bag.
All we needed to do next was sew all the pices of fabric together and ta-da our bag was done.

Motec- Process of Making a Bag
At Motec my group is making a bag. First we talked about what kind of bag we wanted to make and what fabrics we were using. We wrote who, why and what the bag was for. We got out the fabric and pattern for our bag, pinned it up and then we cut it out. Once cutting it we had to read and follow instructions, every bag is different when it comes to sewing it together. Once it is all done you need to check that you have not missed anything or made any mistakes.
With the new skills I have learned I could make Skirts, pencil cases, T-shirts ect.

Rippa rugby day
Tuesday the 29th of May there was a Rippa rugby tournament in the Motueka rugby grounds. Mapua school entered four different teams, one competition grade and three other social grades. Kurtis, Daniel, Angus and Oscar were the coaches, Oscar is the coach of the competition grade and Kurtis, Daniel and Angus were the coaches of the social teams. Kurtis coached his team to victory and versed Daniels team in the final and it was a 6-2 win to Kurtis's team bearing in mind Dan's team was a little younger but size never matters. In the end it was a very fun day and all the kids enjoyed the day. Mr Searle and Brownie were really pleased with the teams and their coaches.
The coaches are going to award Most Valuable Player awards on Fridays assembly.
