Logging on the Steadfast

On camp we went on the Stedfast which was a sailing ship. We all had stations that we went around. They were all important to sailing the ship.

The first station that we were on was called the log. It was a measurement of how fast the ship was going.

We had to let a rope with knots in it out for 10 seconds and then reel it in. The number of knots that went out were how fast we were going. On average we were going at 2 knots the highest we reached was 4.5 knots top speed

STEADFAST

At camp we went on the Steadfast.  It is an old sailing boat.  We all had different stations which had different jobs which keeped the boat sailing smoothly.  My group was Theo, Nathaneil and I, we were on charting. The job entailed getting all the information from all the other stations and wrote it down on a chart.  It was heaps of fun and a new experience for all!!!!          By Sophie

The Steadfast

 Bow Watch / Look Out

On camp we went on the Steadfast which is A big sailing boat.

The owners of the boat,  Grace & Laurence set up seven stations There was the Plankton Net, the Navigation, The Bow watch, speed, Lead line, Helm, Dredge. Our first station was bow watch.

For this we had to communicate with the Helm by using the face of the clock so if there was a log straight ahead we would tell the helm , log at 12 o'clock.

We were also looking for common birds/sea life through binoculars. Plus there was a  challenge for getting a picture of a seal while it was out of the water  and first to spot a dolphin.

So That was my First activity and one of my favourites. This job is rather important so I am glad I learned how to do it.

Helmsman
Our first rotation on the Steadfast was manning the helm.
Being a helmsman involves keeping the ship on course and And using the wind to propel the ship using the compass or/and a spotting point.
I found it hard to Keep the ship pointing straight ahead.  While we were waiting in line, we were watching the trawling team bring up sea life.
I thought it was amazing to be in control of such a huge ship. It was an awesome day.

Sailing on camp

Sailing on camp

This year on our class camp we went to Mistletoe bay. It is a really great place to stay. One of the activities we did was we went on a sailing ship called the steadfast. It was a huge sailing boat. The sail was giant. In this group is James, Lara, Eva and Lauryn.

There were 7 different stations that we had to do to understand what you do on a sailing ship. The first one we did was were you have to chuck a heavy sinker into the water, to see if were to close to the bottom or not. The rope was about 30 meters long and and while we were throwing it in and it didn't touch the ground so it must have been really deep.

It was heaps of fun on the steadfast and I hope that one day I can go on it again.
